OIL REFINERY PROPOSAL
Experts Visit Site Near Nelson ' (New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, July 13. A team of five overseas experts today inspected the first of 18 possible sites in New Zealand for a £2O , million oil refinery, on. the mudflats at Wakapuaka, six miles from Nelson. The experts were told that to raise the level of the 300-acre mud flat area by five feet the estimated cost was £200,000. The supply of 5000 k.w. of power would not require any major, additions to the main grid supply system and independent supply lines could be provided. The depth of water available off the Boulder bank would accommodate 42,000 ton and 85,000 ton super tankers bringing in crude oil.
A water supply of up to 20 million gallons daily could be provided by developing a new scheme in the Maitai river, the city engineer (Mr C. L Kidson) assured the visitors.
To overcome the difficulty of shipping out heated bitumen, it was suggested that a channel be dredged on the inside of the boulder bank to provide a loading berth. An area further south could be reclaimed.
