BASKETBALL Technical, Sacred Heart Lead Senior Competition
Technical strengthened its claim to championship honours by beating Kakatai in the main game of the Canterbury Basketball Association's senior competition, played at South Hagley Park on Saturday. Considerable interest was shown in this game and the stands were packed long before the game began. In the other games, Sacred Heart decisively beat Digbys and Teachers' College beat West A. West H had a narrow win over St. Nicholas. Results: — Technical 27, Kakatai 22. Sacred Heart 32, Digbys 19.
Teachers’ College 25, West A 20. West B 27, St. Nicholas 25.
Competition points are as follows:—Technical 16, Sacred Heart 16, Kakaitai 14, West A 8, West B «, Teachers’ College 5, Digbys 3, St. Nicholas 2. TECHNICAL V. KAKATAI
Technical was a little uncertain in the early stages and its first three shots failed. Kakatai however, ■ailed to capitalise on this opportunity and Technical was soon attacking strongly. Kakatai's scoring opportunities were intelligently restricted by the defensive play of P. Edmonds. B. Rowe and C. Brown, and Technical’s adherence to this policy proved decisive. Kakatai, experiencing difficulty in penetrating the circle, was bustled, and its careless passes from centre to forward, gave Technical vital openings.
Scores were evened at 5-all but a series of minor infringments, mostly stepping, caused uncertainty in both teams. Technical recovered well from this set-back and excellent play by the forwards J. Fuller and P. Dorward, ably supported by M. Fisher and S. Konradie, enabled the side to gain a 5-goal lead to make the half-time score, Technical 13. Kakatai 8.
Technical was seen to greater advantage in the second spell and its control' of the game was seldom in doubt. Excellent combination, combined with unusually good handling gave Technical the initiative almost throughout the second half. Kakatai, although purposeful ana determined for long periods, was at no time permitted to dominate play and Technical retained Its 5goal advantage. * Miss B. Stone was referee. SACRED HEART V. DIGBYS
The Digbys players were slow to find form and with some ease Sacred Heart intercepted their throw-oil to open its score. Sacred Heart quickly established a lead of nine goals and this was not threatened in this spell. Fine team work witn the centre. B. McAleer, P. Lawson and N. Fahey, dominating all phases of play, gave Sacred Heart the initiative throughout and its attack was further enhanced by the capable interceptions of the defence, E. Back, well supported by M. Dwan. Sacred Heart led by 11 goals to 2, but two well-judged shots by A. Hughes gave Digbys some incentive, and as their play steadied, the defence, M. Cooper and C. Orsborne combined well to break up Sacred Heart’s forward combination. At half-time, Sacred Heart led 15-6. Digbys attacked strongly and tor some minutes held a territorial ad 1 - vantage during which they added to their score with two excellent shots by the forwards, F. Pyne and A. Hughes. Significant saves by the smoothly-functioning Sacred Heart centre soon enabled Sacred Heart to dominate play, and the forwards, M. Murray and P. Glubb, goaled easily from all round the circle. In the later stages, Digbys had no answer to Sacred Heart's superior attack and Sacred Heart won-con-vincingly by 32 goals to 15. Miss C. Brown was referee. TEACHERS’ COLLEGE V. WEST A Poor shooting in the early stages kept Teachers’ College at a disadvantage and although holding a territorial advantage throughout the spell, it was unable to gain a decisive lead. The scores were even until just before half-time. West's forward centre thirds repeatedly lost possession through simple passing errors and the College defence, M. McCrea and A. Stewart, were quick to take advantage of any loose passes. Mainly through their purposeful play, Teachers’ College held a lead of two goals at half-time, the score being 12-10.
West made valiant attempts to bridge the gap and its determined ’(Torts succeeded. College tightened
play and superior centre tactics, initiated by A. Blair and M. Tuuta found gaps in West’s defence, the West hold on this game slackened as the College forwards A. Humphreys and C. Clapham shot well. The referee was Mrs D. Hughes. . ST. NICHOLAS V. WEST B
From the beginning West looked the better team, but lack of finesse in its moves and somewhat unlucky shooting enabled St. Nicholas to keep the scoring fairly even. Neither side showed convincing form, and there were numerous errors and broken moves. West held the lead at 8 goals to 7, but at half-time the score was level, 13-aii. G. Lethaby’s fine saves for St. Nicholas were mainly responsible tor her team's position. The scoring in the second spell was again very even until West’s forwards C. McMaster and T. Langford, heartened by their improved shooting in the second spell, made a determined bid for success. Their Efforts were rewarded when West gained a lead of 24 goals to 21. St. Nicholas, however, fought hard to avert defeat and' the forwards, J. Fraser and A. Cotter, shot well In the final stages.. St. Nicholas could not quite bridge the gap. Mr R. Overend was referee.
