Decisive Win For Second Earl

(N.Z Press Association—Copyright!

BRISBANE, July 5. The New Zealand three-year-old. Second Earl, outclassed Australia’s best sprinters to win the Doomben Ten Thousand yesterday. Second Earl (4/1) beat the rank outsider, Blue Dart (100/1) by a half-length, with the Sydney sprinter. Squander Lad (40/1) a length away third. The New Zealand trainer, W. Clifton, who was almost speechless after Second Earl’s win, said: “We will now stay here and try to win the Randwick Epsom in the spring.’ Second Earl, which started from barrier 18—the extreme outside—was the sixth winner in the last 10 years to start from 14 or further out. He beat the field out of the barrier by a good length in an otherwise even start.

The heavily-backed favourite, Gold Stakes, got quickly into his stride and went past the inside horses. Inside the first furlong Gold Stakes was leading Second Ear). From the first furlong to the last Second Earl and Gold Stakes fought out the match race everyone expected With a furlong and a half to go. Podmore sent Gold Stakes up to Second Earl, and got to within half a length on the inside. However, in a few strides it was obvious Gold Stakes was not going to beat Second Earl. Gold Stakes failed to run on. and weakened into ninth place. Another big disappointment was the New Zealand champion colt. Fountainhead. Fountainhead, backed, in from 6/1 to 9/2 after many big bets, was knocked out of the race in the first furlong. When the field had travelled a furlong. Fountainhead received a bad check. Ron Hutchinson had to check him so badly the colt dropped back near the rear oi the field. Fountainhead did not get balanced afterwards, and finished eleventh. Second Earl was bred in New South Wales and was purchased at the Randwick Newmarket stables as a yearling for 850 guineas. He is raced by Mrs- C. McGregor who, for several years, has brought horses to Australia with the trainer, W. CiiftaW. In 1933, her stayer. Earldom, raced successfully in all the eastern States. He now has had 23 starts for 11 wins and five placings, worth £17,635. Result:— DOOMBEN TEN THOUSAND,
