Decisive Win At Delaware Park

The j New Zehland-bred Monte Carlo, carrying top weight of 8-7. broke the Delaware Park 11 furlongs record in winning the 31,400-dollar Sussex Handicap yesterday. Ridden by Howard Grant, the six-year-old, which did most of his racing in Australia, cleared away from the field to win by three lengths in 2min 16sec. " The old record was 2min 17 3-ssec, by French-bred Rafty in the same Tace in 1957.

The race was on grass. Monte Carlo started favourite at approximately 7 to 4. Grant held Monte Carlo in fourth position until the nine-horse field made the turn out of the straight soon after the start. He then let him go, and Monte Carlo moved swiftly to the front, opened up a long lead, and easily staved off a challenge by King Grail in the last furlong. Pop Corn came in third, a length and a half behind King Grail.

The win was worth 22.150 dollars to Monte Carlo, now raced in' the United States by Mrs Henry Hecht. Grant rode Australia’s Sailor's

Guide last year in the International Stakes/at Laurel, Maryland. Sailor’s Guide won on a pretest. At Chicago yesterday, the American champion, Round Table, broke the world nine iurlongs record on grass when he won the 85,800 dollars Stars and Stripes Handicap in Imin I’S 800 ’ The old record wag Imin 47 2-ssec, set by Poona at Santa Anita in 1954.
