(New Zeaiana Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 5. Winnmg the women's section bv 10 games to 2. Canterbury's table tennis team regained the Clapshaw trophy from Wellington on Saturday night by 13 games to 13. the final mixed doubles match deciding the issue.

Canterbury took the lead in the final round of the men's doubles when T. R. D. Flint and V. N Brightwell b« at J. S. Crosslev and R. J. Moffatt. That gave Canterbury a 13-11 lead, with the mixed doubles to play. In the first two. Canterbury and Wellington won one each, and Wellington had to win the last two in straight aeta to win by a set. M. L. Dunn and Mrs T. E. McGregor had no trouble with J. A. Dowle and Miss B. Taylor, and then It fell to the experienced Brightwell and Mrs P. M. Purdon to carry the day. Thev won the first set against J. S. Crossley and Mrs J. Harris (nee Bratton*, and it was all over. Match Decided By Final Game "The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. July 5. The Canterbury table tennis team arrived in Wellington on Saturday morning with one trophy and they will return home tomorrow with one —but not th* same one. On Saturday night the team regained the Clapthaw trophy from Wellington, but tonight lost the Brightwell Cup to Hutt valley by one set, with the games even st 14. Hutt Valley won 33 sets to Canterbury's 33. The match was decided on the last mixed doubles game of the evening, when A. Robert* and Miss J. Brown beat V. N. Brightwell and Mr* P. M. Purdon, after dropping the first set. This is the first time that Hutt Valley ha* beaten Canterbury for the Brightwell Cup. whicn, however, wa* only given in 1956 by V. N. Brightwell, who captained Canterbury this evening. Canterbury led Hutt Valley 13-11, with the four mixed doubles to be played, and when Hutt Valley took two of the first three, it wa* left to the proven combination of N. V. Brightwell and Mrs P. M. Purdon to try to pull Canterbury through They tailed to repeat their performances in a similar situation, the previous evening. Canterbury’s strength wa* in their women, who won their section, 2-4. The Canterbury men last. 6-7. Brightwell and T. R. D. Flint played m the top bracket for Canterbury—they played in the lower half against Wellington. The highlight of the evening wa* the clash between Mia* J. E. Brown the North Island champion, and Mr* P. M. Purdon, the South Island ehamoton. Miss Purdon, the lefthander. won the first set largely through her terrific forehand driving. Miss Brown won the second set. 22-20, after coming from behind. Mis* Brown II a purely defensive player, but at it *ne ha* no superior in New Zealand. She is ranked third nationally, and Mr* Purdon fourth, tn tM third set Mis* Brown was down 13-17. but Mrs Purdon, in her eagerness, overhit and Mia* Brown took the Mt, 21-18, Bota Brightwell and Flint played exceptionally well in winning all their single*, with Flint, in particular* driving well.
