Replacement To Join Lions
W. M. Patterson, the 6ft 2in English centre from Sale, near Manchester, who has been chosen to replace the Irish wing threequarters, N. H. Brophy, in the British Isles Rugby team, arrived in Christchurch yesterday from Australia, Patterson, who will be the only uncapped player in the team, has played for North West Counties, Cheshire, and the Barbarians. He also took part in the English trials last season.
Patterson has played most of his football in recent years at centre, but he said yesterday that he was quite familiar with wing three-quarters play and had played there at school. He said he was fit and had been in light training since the English football season finished two months and a half ago. Patterson stayed in Christchurch for a few hours only and left early last evening for Timaru to join the British Isles team. ,
Brophy, who broke a bone in his foot in his first appearance in Australia last month, is touring with the Lions at the invitation of the New Zealand Rugby Union.
