Christchurch Traffic Studies
Christchurch is well placed to profit from overseas municipalities experience in solving traffic problems. Traffic engineering is one of the newer sciences; before lessons learnt elsewhere can be applied to ; Christchurch, much research is necessary locally. One satisfactory feature of the preparation of a master traffic plan for . Christchurch is the manner in : which government agencies are co-operating with the Regional , Planning Authority and the « City Council Similar co- - operation from the public (who will be the real beneficiaries of „ the plan) will help to ensure that the proper decisions are finally reached. Next week the Transport Department will begin a study to determine the
present pattern of traffic flows into and across the city. The success of the study will depend largely upon the public’s cooperation. If motorists and householders realise beforehand that they will serve their own and their city’s interests by ready collaboration, the investigators’ task will be lightened, and useful data, otherwise unobtainable, will be compiled. Major reading improvements will be costly; and everybody should be concerned to prevent mistakes. The focal authorities and their staffs bear most of the responsibility for replanning the Christchurch traffic system on modern lines. When the public are invited to assist in a small but important way, it is their interest as well as their duty to respond.
