(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 3. New Zealand has again taken a high' place In the international clay target shooting competition. According to a cable received from England today the Dominion was second, being narrowly beaten by Australia, the holder of the Mackintosh Trophy which is awarded annually to the winning country. New Zealand did not enter the field until 1953 and registered its first success in 1954, retaining this position in the next three years. This year the New Zealand team of 30 shooters shot in Hamilton during the 1959 national championships. Each country is represented by the same number of shooters, but only the best 10 scores count. The New Zealand team's score, kept secret after the shooting in Hamilton, was sent to England and the results of the match were announced in Dublin after the home countries had shot there at the end of last month. _ . . Best scorer for New Zealand, and also for the Commonwealth, was L. W. Kerr, who recorded the first possible of 300 points since the conditions ' of this competition were changed in 1957. J. Newton Thomas (Melbourne) equalled this score when his country shot in May. Competition scores (possible 3000) were:—Australia. 2956; New Zealand, 2948; Canada, 2934; South Africa, 2876; England. 2840; Scotland, 2801; Wales, 2758; Ireland. 2750; Central Africa, 269.

The Dominion’s top scorers (possible 300 points) were:—L. W. Kerr (Rangiora) 300, J. McKenzie (Seaward Downs) 299, E. M. Green (Matamata) 296, D. W. Hudsplth (Kaikohe) 296, B. G. Begg (Kirwee) '295, P. A. Matheson (Wellington) 293, C. Hartley (Tauranga) 293. H. C. Walker (Hakataramea) 292, J. B. Thomasen (Taihape) 292. G. C. Shefford (Makikihi) 292. C. Darrall (Morrinsville) also registered 292 points, but was ballotted out. -
