Army Recruiting’s Progress
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 3. At question time in the House of Representatives today Mr T. T. Murray (Opposition, Stratford) asked the Minister pf Defence (Mr Connolly) to Say what progress had been made so far in the recruiting campaign for the Army. Mr Murray asked the Minister to indicate how volunteers wertf-' proportfohefi 'as between officers, non-eommtesioned officers and other ranks, and to say Wfrat was the relation between the parade strength of units and the number of volunteers who had offered their services. Mr D. S. Seath (Opposition, Waitemo) asked the‘ Minister of Railways (Mr Moohan) to indicate what plans were being considered about North Island main trunk passenger, expresses. He also,asked if it was proposed to curtail present services, and if so, what alternative facilities were proposed.
Mr A. E. Allen (Opposition, Franklin) asked the Minister of Justice (Mr Mason) whether he intended to make further appointments to the Commission of the
Peace soon, adding in a note to the question that the last list of Justices appointed was gazetted nearly 18 month* ago. Mr G. G. Grieve (Opposition, Awarua) in conjunction with Mr B. E. Taiboys (Opposition, Wallace) and Mr J. R. Hanan (Opposition, Invercargill) asked the Minister of Marine CMr Fox) whether, in view of the fact that the present service being provided by the tug James O’Brien, between Bluff and Stewart Island, was inadequate for the needs of the island community, he would replace the tug immediately.
