NEW FRIGATE FOR R.N.Z.N.

Lady Freyberg To Launch Taranaki

(New Zealand Pres* Assoctattoni WELLINGTON, July 3. Lady Freyberg, wife of Lieutenant General Lord Freyberg, has accepted the invitation of the Government to launch H.M.N.Z.S Taranaki, the second of the two fast anti-submarjne frigates which are being built in the United Kingdom for the Roy a’ New Zealand Navy. Announcing this the Minister of Defence (Mr Connolly) said that the Taranaki would be launched at Cowes on August 19. “We are delighted that Lady Freyberg is able to accept our invitation,” he added. ‘‘Naval tradition attaches great importance to the choice of the lady who launches a ship into Her Majesty’s service. I pannot think of anyone more appropriate than the wife of New Zealand’s most distinguished soldier, who was herself a tireless worker for the welfare of all New Zealand servicemen." The first frigate, H.M.N.ZJS, Otago, was launched by Princess Margaret last December. The Otago< will commission in mid--1960 and arrive in New Zealand later that year, while the Taranaki will commission at the end of 1960 and arrive in New Zealand in early 1961.
