The Government
Sir,—Have any of your readers ever produced a copy of a newspaper from non-capitalist countries to verify all that we are told of their freedom to discuss or criticise their leaders’ doings? Have these countries any correspondence columns? I venture to say our local papers between them have been responsible for stirring sluggish authority to action in needed municipal improvement. Parliament is kept alert by editorials, and of course, by your correspondents' many prods. Human nature being what it is, in a well-fed welfare state should we not all be grateful for these duties well and continually done by those with thought to save our own effort and time?— Yours, etc., TOE STRETCH, j July 3, 1959.
