Petrol Refunds

Sir, —About three months ago I put in my claim for refund on petrol used in my tractor, but up to July 1 I have received no refund and I understand many others in my district are in tne same fix. We required these returns for our income returns for the year ended March, 1959. I wonder whose fault it is that these refunds are so long held up. We have to pay cash for our petrol and this long wait for our refund is very inconvenient to many of us farmers. If the boot was on the other foot and we owed the Government this money, on would go 10 per cent., and no beg pardons.—Yours, etc., ‘ HARD UP. July 1, 1959. [The chief postmaster (Mr R. Elcock) says the. South Island branch of the Registrar of Motor Vehicles, which deals with all applications for refunds of duty on motor-spirits ledged in New Zealand, has approved over 51,000 applications for refunds of duty on motor-spirits used during the last quarterly period “This represents nearly 4000 more claims than were lodged for the corresponding quarter last year. The processing of such a large number of applications is a task of considerable magnitude and some delay in payment is inevitable. As it appears that there may be a special reason for the delay in payment of the writer’s claim, it is suggested that he get in touch with me so that the matter may be investigated.”]
