CITY HAS NO NEW U.S. FLAGS
49-Star Ensign Tomorrow No United States flags with the reorganised arrangement of 49 stars had arrived in Christchurch up to yesterday, to the knowledge of the consular agent, Mr W. G. Quirk, and the United States Navy’s senior officer at Harewood, Lieutenant - Commander J. Lynch. The new flags, whose stars were rearranged after the admission of Alaska as a Stale in the Union, officially come into use tomorrow. ‘‘They promised to send us one but we haven’t sighted it yet,’’ Commander Lynch said. “None whatsoever,” he replied when asked if servicemen in the Navy’s advance base force for polar operations had planned- any organised celebration of their Independence Day tomorrow. Mr Quirk said he knew of no planned celebrations to mark July 4 but added that on Wednesday evening the North American Club had held a combined function to observe Canada's Dominion Day on July 1 and the United States Independence Day. Members of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce stood in silence last evening as a mark of respect to Messrs T. M. Beadle and G. E. Royds, who died recently.
