Smaller Entry With Improved Prices

Two yearling bulls bred from imported American semen topped the sales at the fifth annual Friesian sale at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s showgrounds yesterday. One was by the American champion Friesian bull. Sovereign Cochran, and the other by a high testing son of that sire. In spite of a lower entry this year for the sale, the cattle offered were of a high standard and there was a good attendance of buyers. The eight in-calf heifers offered averaged 96| guineas and six of the seven yearling bulls offered were sold at auction, averaging 123 guineas. Prices were generally better than at last year’s sale.

The top-priced bull, offered by its breeder, Mr M. B. Leslie, Lesdale, Prebbleton, sold for 2421 guineas to G. I. Kay, Waikato. The second highest price of 200 guineas was .paid by J. J. Stott, of Oarnaru, also for a Lesdale yearling bull. The top heifer, from R. F Dickie, Tuturau, sold for 135 guineas to F. W. Cox. Belfast, and a second from the same vendor was bought by E. L. Adams, Brookside, at 1221 guineas. Details of sales were:—

R. F. Dickie. Tuturau: one heifer at 135gns (F. W. Cox. Belfast), one at I22jgns (E. L. Adams, Brookside), and one 90gns (Gaw Bros., Waimate). one yearling bull at 107igns iG. Van Asch, Boon Hay). I. J. Dickie. Edendale: one yearling hull at 75gns (A. W. Morrison, Blenheim).

R. E. Gillman and Son. Rangiora one yearling bull at 60gns (W. J Hawthorne, Blenheim).

Kay Bros., Duvauchelle: one heifer at 87Jgna (Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln,), one at 70gns (K. J. Earl. Hawarden), and one at 60gns (A. D. Oliver, Hororata). one yearling bull at 52}gns (H. Thompson, Pleasant Point). M. B. Leslie, Prebbleton-; one yearling bull at 242Jgns (G. I. Kay, Waikato), and one at 200gns (J. J. Stott, Oarnaru), one two-year bull at 125gns (Gaw Bros., Waimate). H. G. Mclntosh. Prebbleton: one heifer at 105gns (Gaw Bros., Waimate).

E. C. Suncicell, Brookside: one heifer at lOOgns (Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln). The sale was. conducted by the stud stock department of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd.
