Consumer Council Plan Criticised (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 2. The consumer protection councils proposed by the Department of Industries and Commerce were described as “just another bureaucratic imposition” with “a strong' political background” by members of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce today. The secretary (Mr W. N. Pearman) quoted a newspaper article which described the work of similar organisations in Britain Goods were brought over the counter without the knowledge of the manufacturer, tested and the results of the tests published in special bulletins. Mr E. O. Faber said the estab-

lishing of consumer councils was “an indictment on the ability of people to do their own buying.” The chamber will ask the Associated Chambers of Commerce to refer the newspaper article to the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Holloway) for his comments.
