SHORTAGES OF FOOD

Leaders Confer In Shanghai (N Z. Pres* Association—Copyright) TOKYO, July 1. Food shortages in big Chinese cities were admitted by Peking Radio in a report which said that Communist officials met for six days in Shanghai recently to try to solve the problem, British United Press said. The conference was called by the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, and was presided over by the VicePremier of the State Council (Li Hsien-Hsien), a member of the Party Politbureau, and one of China’s leading economists. ’ Peking Radio said the answer to the food shortages was for the cities to depend more on local production and less on supplies from other places. It therefore recommended that , communes on the outskirts of cities increase production, and urged that the Army, Government organisations, schools, and ordinary city dwellers should help. 7
