GOLF Two Englishmen Lead In British Open

MUIRFIELD (Scotland), July 1. A strong west wind had many leading golfers in trouble in the first round of the 72-hole British Open championship today. At the end of the dav, rounds of 68 had given the lead to two Englishmen, 40-year-old Fred Bullock, and Arnold Stickley, aged 32.
They are a shot in front of Tony Cerda, the 37-year-old Argentinian runner-up in 1951 to Max Faulkner, of Britain. Next, on the 70 mark, are Sam King, a former British Ryder Cup player, the amateur Michael Bonallack. of Britain, and Flory van Donck (Belgium). The present champion, Peter Thomson, of Australia, chasing his fifth title, started with a 74. He was one of the first victims of the wind and rain squalls. Henry Cotton, the 52-year-old master who won one of his three title at Muirfield in 1948, delighted the crowd with his controlled golf, which gave him a 71. Gary Player, the 23-year-old South African showed the same unpreparedness as Thomson for the sudden change in weather, and he went round in 75. Sensation of Day The day’s sensation was provided by Scotland’s Eric Brown, the British Ryder Cup player. He returned an 82, and announced his retirement from the championship. Driving from the sixth tee he felt the recurrence of his recent shoulder injury caused by a slipped disc. The Walker Cup international. Bonallack, led the amateurs with 70. R. Jack was right behind him with 71. and J. Carr was one more stroke away. At the other end of the list nine players took more than 80. while Sewsunker 'Sewgolum, the unorthodox South African Indian. took 79. About half of the players will be eliminated after tomorrow’s second round. Only the 50 topscorers—or fewer if there is a tie for the last place—will be allowed to play the last two rounds on Friday.
