POLICE FORCE STRENGTH
Establishment Basis Sought
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 2. The Commissioner of Police (Mr W. S. Brown) is seeking approval from the Government for an over-all police establishment based bn a police-to-population formula. At March 31 last, the ratio of police to population was one to 934.
In his annual report presented to Parliament today, Mr Brown says: “. . . We should reach the stage by the end of next year when we can get all the recruits we require. It becomes necessary now to determine upon a maximum establishment. , . Mr Brown says the calculation of necessary police strengths is fraught with difficulties, tjut he can think of no more satisfactory system than the relating of overall establishment to population. “This year, 88 replacements are needed to fill the gap left by the retirement of men at the age of 60 and the aim should be to reach full strength necessary to give proper police coverage.” he says. At March 31 last, there was a shortage of 64 men. The strength of the force was then 2437 men. 77 cadets, 50 police surgeons, six matrons and one district Constable.
