£78m SURPLUS IN BRITAIN
Trading For Flint Quarter Of Year (N2 Preu Association—Copynghti LONDON. July 1 The Treasury yesterday announced a £7B million surplus in the United Kingdom balance of payments for the first quarter of this year. Reuter's financial editor said this was below, the exceptional £l7O million a year ago. but was otherwise satisfactory. He said the good trade figures for April and May were not reflected in the first-quarter result. They would benefit the secondquarter figures, to be published In September. Government current expenditure was reduced by the receipt of £l2 million from Germany in March for support costs in 195859.
The net effect of the current and capital transactions was a welcome improvement of £4B million in the balance of the United Kingdom’s monetary external assets and liabilities.
