707 JET AIRLINERS FOR BRITAIN.—The British Overseas Airways Corporation’s first Rolls-Royce-engined Boeing 707 jet airliner making its maiden flight recently. The 707, the first of the type to fly with four Rolls-Royce Conway by-pass jet engines, Is undergoing flight tests in the United States. Later this year the aircraft will be delivered to the B.O.A.C., which next year will inaugurate trans-Atlantic services with a fleet of 15 such aircraft. The engines, each developing a thrust of 16,000lb, give the 707 a speed of 550 miles an hour and a range of more than 6500 miles. The aircraft can carry up to 170 passengers. The Australian international airline, Qantas, has ordered seven of the aircraft, the first of which, the City of Sydney, has just left San Francisco.
