NEW BOWLS MAT

A new mat which its designer, Mr C. Woolf, claims will eliminate 80 per cent, of the guesswork in learning how much green to take in making a shot, has been submitted to the Royal New South Wales Bowling Association for approval. Members of the association’s match committee will try the mat and if it makes a favourable recommendation, the association will ask permission from the Australian Bowling Council to vary the law on the shape of mats so that the new mat can be given a prolonged trial. The law on mats sizes says that they must not be less than 4ft nor more than 4ft 9in long and not less than 17in nor more than 19in wide.

Over-all, the Woolf mat conforms to these measurements, but at the rounded ends the width would be less than the minimum of 17in.

The International Bowling Board, under whose rules Empire Games bowls are played, is also considering the size of mats, along with other rules, in an attempt to reach world conformity on the laws.
