Club Rugby Review
OJ. Turner has been a stalwart of the Merivale senior side for a long time now, but his football remains of a very high standard. The example he set his forwards last Saturday played a big part in his side’s success.
fe Although he seemed to F~ be carrying a little too -X- much weight, the New Brighton front-row prop, T. Milesi, played hard from start to finish, and was the equal of any forward in the game against Christchurch on Saturday.
In his second year of senior football, the young Marist five eighths, J. G. McCort, is showing good form. Against Linwood he made two of Marist’s three tries and his tackling and covering gave the opposition little chance of breaking through.
_ Although N. S. Roberts has retired from the Old Boys’ senior team, the club is fortunate in having such an excellent replacement as I. Brown, who played at No. 8 against Merivale last Saturday. Brown is not a particularly big forward, but his dashing play is strongly reminiscent of that of M. Hern, who has the reputation of giving his very best at all times. • The diminutive Sydenham full-back, D. L. Gallop, -L played one of his best games this season against University. He saved a certain try when D. J. Davison was flashing for the line with no-one else to beat, and was reliable in taking the ball in the face of forward rushes.
I The Technical fiveLJ eighths, J. Waine, who was -* ■- line umpire for the match against Albion, was congratulating himself on not having to play, when he was called on 'as a replacement three minutes before time. Almost immediately he had to tackle a player. As he was getting to his feet, the referee, Mr L. M. West, somehow got entangled with him and accidently kicked Waine in the nose. Waine left the field after the match with a bleeding nose and a regret that he was foolish enough to Play.
