EXPORT PRODUCE AWARDS
Harbour Board Cups
Awarded
Awards for butter, cheese and lamb graded for export at either Lyttelton or Christchurch were presented to factory managers at yesterday’s meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board.
The cups presented were:— Butter.—Kaikoura factory (Mr D. W. Melville, manager). Cheese.—Okain’s Bay factory (Mr W. H. N. Pidgeon, manager).
Lamb.—Mr W. V. Chatterton (Dunsandel).
Eleven factories competed for the butter cup, said the chairman (Mr W. P. Glue). A total of 65,000 cartons was received. The Kaikoura factory shipped 10,000 cartons.
Nine thousand crates of cheese were graded, said Mr Glue. All came from Banks Peninsula factories. Because of the extremely dry season, the quantity was the lowest Since the 1949-50 season. Meat was exported from New Zealand to 29 different countries, said Mr Glue. The meat had to be advertised and sold. Unless the meat and dairy industries made headway, the board could not advance its development of the port. The export lamb competition conducted by the Canterbury A and P. Association assisted lamb production, said the president (Mr H. C. A. Sidey). The production of the right type of meat for overseas was important.
