AUSTRALIAN DIPLOMAT
Farewell Function By Chamber
The office of the Australian trade commissioner in the South Island, which he had established two years ago was here to stay. Mr H. Sullivan told members of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce at a farewell function in his honour last evening. Tributes to the co-operation and assistance extended by Mr Sullivan during his term of office were paid by the chamber president (Mr J. Roy Smith). Mr Sullivan had established the first trade commission office in the South Island “and we are vary happy it was Australia that established it,” Mr Smith said. Referring to the popularity achieved by Mr Sullivan in Christchurch, he said that to attain the highest degree of diplomacy one had to be bom in Australia of Irish descent.
In reply, Mr Sullivan said that one of the problems of his job was that as soon as he got to know a place he had to move on. “I have enjoyed myself in Christchurch where I have always fpund myself among friends and have had all the help I ’could possibly want.” Members of the Chamber welcomed Mr Sullivan’s successor, Mr D. M. Walker, who said he was looking forward to his tour of duty here and hoped to be here for four or five years.
