ISSUED FALSE CHEQUES
Man Admitted To Probation

WiHiam Lawlor, aged 28. a carpenter of Timaru, had obtained money and goods of a total value of £216 2s by issuing a number of valueless cheques after opening an account at a Timaru trading bank with a deposit of £9 said Senior-Detective J. A. Marshall in the Magistrate’s Court at Timaru .today. Lawlor admitted nine charges of false pretences, one of forgery, and one of driving a motor-car while disoualified, before Mr E. A. Lee. S.M. Senior-Detective Marshall said Lawlor represented himself to the bank as R. J. Wills, a fencing contractor. He deposited £9 and received a cheque book. Later in the day he issued a cheque for £8 10s. which was honoured, and then a series of cheques in Temuka, Timaru, and Waimate, all of which were dishonoured. On June 5 he had produced a driver’s licence in the name of Heeny to a rental car firm, and had driven a car away. Lawlor, who was represented by Mr O. G Stevens, was admitted to two years’ probation on each of the charges of false pretences and forgery, and was ordered to make restitution of the money involved. On the charge o' driving while disqualified he wa fined £25, and he was disquali fled for a further period of 18 months.
