EXTRADITION DEMAND

No Comment By

Mr Nash

fFrom Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 30.

It is regarded as most unlikely that the New Zealand Government will accede to the Japanese request to return to the Japanese authorities a sailor of H.M.N.Z.S Royalist alleged to have been concerned in an attack on a Japanese taxi-driver in Yokohama

The Japanese authorities have another New Zealand sailor in custody, and propose to proceed with his trial under the United Nations Status of Forces Agreement.

The Prime Minister, Mr Nash, confirmed today that Japan had asked for the extradition of a second New Zealand sailor, but he declined to comment further. There is a possibility that the Japanese authorities will not proceed with the trial until the second man is handed over. New Zealand, it is suggested, is not likely to do this, for there is doubt whether the terms of the Status of Forces Agreement apply in his case.

The agreement says that the Japanese may. demand custody of servicemen in Japan, but makes no mention of extradition.
