Housing Loans

Sir,—ln ‘ ‘The Press” of June 20, my attention was drawn to the number of houses built since the return of the Labour Government, and I thank them as the mother of a family for allowing me to mortgage my family allowance to enable me to buy a section and to have a home built/ It does not concern me much whether the State Advances Corporation or the taxpayers have to meet any deficit in the buying of the homes by those who have agreed to sign over our children’s allowances.— Yours, etc.,

MOTHER OF FIVE. June 25, 1959.

Sir,—ln “The Press” of June 20 a correspondent eulogised Mr Fox, Minister of Housing, and Mr Kirk, M.P. On June 18 it was reported that 19,600 houses and flats were built in the year ending March 31. Recently, Mr Kirk made reference to State housing loans. As there is now a subsidy of 1 3-8 per cent on the loans, will the accumulated amount incurred be borne by the taxpayers in general or by the State tenants? —Yours, etc., F. June 26, 1959.
