PLOUGHING MATCH AT KIRWEE

National Qualifier From Swannanoa

Ploughing what was described by the judges as one of the best plots they had seen this year, I. W. Winter, of Swannanoa, won the qualifying event for .the National Ploughing Championship at the annual ploughing match and dog trials held by the Courtenay - Paparua Ploughing Match Association on Mr J. S. Thompson’s property at Kirwee. Mr Winter’s furrows were well turned and stood up, were firm with plenty of depth and showed good weed control—the necessary qualities for a champion. The ground was in excellent condition and, with a fine day, the four competitors scored good points. Other events were well supported and the ploughing by contestants in sail classes was of a high standard. The president ot the association (Mr J. D. Henderson) said that conditions for the match were the best for at least 45 years and there was not a single plot on the ground that was not a credit to the man who ploughed it The second placing in the qualifying event was awarded to W, A. Bradley, of Courtenay, and I. J. Maw, of Methven, was placed third. The judges for this event were Messrs T. F. Carter, J. B. Wyllie and J. Brooker. Other sections were judged by Messrs J. Wyllie, R. Coleman, P. Duigan and J. McPhedran. Considerable interest is being taken in the Timaru Royal Ploughing Match which will be held on Saturday, July 11, and about 18 entries have been received for the national qualifying event and the special event for ploughmen who have already qualified to plough in the finals for the championship at Hastings on July 25.

The winner of the Atlantic Silver Plough will represent New Zealand in the world ploughing championship at Armoy, in Northern Ireland, in October.
