FIRE ALARM FOR WINDSOR HOUSE

Lack Of Subsidy •* Criticised

The Ministry of Works’ ability to decide whether Windsor House, the Aged People’s Welfare Council’s new home which is scheduled to be opened in November. should have an automatic fire alarm, was questioned at the annual meeting of the council last evening. > . “It is our earnest desire to open the home debt free,” said Mr J. A. White, “and I think we can do it if we scrape the bottom of the barrel. We have not yet been given a subsidy for an automatic fire alarm system. “The. Health Department referred the matter to the Ministry of Works Department and I was surprised to learn that the reply was that an automatic alarm is not necessary for Windsor House” Mr White emphasised the need for speedy evacuation of the home in an emergency. “I intend to take it up strongly with the Health Department.” he said. Mr G. M. Morgan, representing the Diocesan Social Service Council, said a subsidy had been granted for an automatic alarm at Churchill Courts, and urged the council to press its request strongly.
