PRINTING INK SUPPLY

National Papers

Threatened

LONDON, June 30.

Britain’s national daily newspapers and Fleet Street evening newspapers are likely to be affected by the end of this week unless there is a surprise move today in the printing dispute. The general secretary of the National Society of Operative Printers and Assistants, Mr R. W. Briginshaw, said yesterday that there was a big risk of a complete walk-out today of his members in the printing ink industry as a result of actions by the employers. If this happened the national newspapers could continue for only three or four days before jSrinting ink supplies ran out. The position is governed by the newspaper with the smallest supply of ink, because the national newspapers have an agreement that if one cannot print, none will do so. The dispute stems from printing workers’ demands for shorter hours and more money. More than 1000 provincial papers have already been closed by the dispute.
