LABOUR H-BOMB POLICY

Gaitskell Success

Reported

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, June 23. The Labour Party’s national executive reached agreement on a draft statement of policy about nuclear weapons, after nearly three hours’ discussion in a private meeting in the House of Commons yesterday, according to the “Daily Telegraph.”

Prom all accounts, the newspaper said, the Labour leader, Mr Gaitskell, and the foreign affairs expert, Mr Bevan, appeared to have succeeded in their joint stand against unilateral renunciation of nuclear weapons by a Labour Government. In the hope of appeasing a large section of opinion amongst Labour members of Parliament and the trade unions in favour of renunciation, the draft statement was believed to support the idea of a “non-nuclear club.”
