SPECIAL TRAINS FOR TEST
3000 Passengers Expected
Special trains for the third Rugby test against the Lions in Christchurch on August 29 are [expected to carry more than :3000 persons.
Special trains would run to the city from Dunedin, Timaru, Picton, Greymouth. Ashburton, Waipara. and Springfield for the test, a spokesman for the New Zealand Railways said yesterday. Bookings for the test trains were not “as fast as they could be but are expected to be as great as the bookings for the 1956 Springboks test match here,’’ he said.
As well as the special trains, a number of trains would be delayed to depart at 5.15 p.m. to enable persons from the match to catch them.
For the match against the New Zealand Universities next Wednesday. special trains were being run from Greymouth and Timaru. The special double-unit railcar from Greymouth, which would carry about 200 persons, was already fully booked. Similar arrangements had been made for the match against Canterbury on July 25.
The New Zealand Railways Road Services had a number of special buses booked for the matches and had amended departure times for a number oi routes on the day of the Universities match to enable spectators to catch them, a spokesman said.
“Arrangements for the Canterbury match and the third test match have still to be completed.”
