ORAL POLIO VACCINE

Safety Proved Ry Tests

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11.20 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 23. Dr. Albert Sabin, who developed an orally-administered live virus vaccine for polio, said yesterday it had proved entirely safe and highly protective in tests on about 4,500,000 people. Dr. Sabin, of the University of Cincinnati, spoke at an opening session of a week-long conference in Washington called to discuss live polio vaccines. He reported on tests with the new vaccine in Russia, Mexico, Holland, Czechoslovakia, Malaya and parts of the United States. The Sabin vaccine uses live but weakened polio virus in a solution administered by mouth. Dr. A M. Payne, chief of the endeme-epidemic section of the World Health Organisation at Geneva, told the conference the Sabin vaccine could probably be administered at one-tenth of the cost of the Salk vaccine. The Salk vaccine uses dead polio virus by injection. Dr Payne said that the live vaccine taken orally not only was considerably less expensive but was expected to provide lifelong immunisation on a one-dose basis.
