MONEY TAKEN FROM SAFE
Soviet Seamen Missing ST. JOHN’S (Newfoundland), June 23. Two Soviet seamen and an undisclosed sum of money were reported missing from a 3700-ton Russian ship at St. John’s yesterday The seamen vanished from the Russian vessel Neman, a factory ship-supply trawler yesterday afternoon. The skipper of the Neman, Captain A. A. Alexandre, reported later to the Criminal Investigation Deartment of the Newfoundland Constabulary that money had been taken from his safe.
Russian Embassy officers from Ottawa were known to be in St. John's, apparently in connexion with the case. The Neman arrived on Saturday to get supplies from a Russian trawler fleet fishing off the Newfoundland coast. The ship carries a crew of 61, including nine women.
The missing crewmen, whose names were not released, left the ship with only the clothes they were wearing. Neither speaks English. Their ages are given as 21 and 25.
The Criminal Investigation Department would say only that the case was under investigation.
