COLLECTION OF REFUSE
No Complaints From Central Area
The daily collection of refuse in the central area of Christchurch seems to be working satisfactorily. When it was proposed to begin the scheme, which involves rubbish tins being placed outside premises by 7 a.m. each day there were objections from retailers and businessmen that the new scheme was involving them in the expense of having tins put out before ordinary staff began work, that there was a danger of vandals upsetting rubbish tins during the night, and that the streets would be untidy, possibly even dangerous with rubbish tins obstructing footways.
It seemed that none of the objections had been sustained to any degree, said Mr A. H. Jecks, the acting City Engineer, when he was asked yesterday about the new system of collection, which was begun about two months ago. There had been no objections to the council, he said, although a few “diehards” who had opposed the scheme from the beginning were still making their own arrangements for disposal of their refuse. Most business houses seemed to welcome the opportunity of haying their refuse removed on five days of the week instead of two as previously, Mr Jecks said. Most business premises also had places where rubbish tins could be placed without interfering with pedestrian traffic. A few rubbish tins had been upset by vandals, but they had been only a few and only in a certain area within a few days, he said.
From the council’s point of view it was much easier to have the rubbish collected every morning before the city traffic grew dense.
