BOTTLE ADRIFT FIVE YEARS
Christchurch Man’s Note Intact
A bottle thrown into the sea 200 miles outside Wellington five years ago was found last month on the Karekare beach, about 25 miles south-west of Auckland. After a “mad impulse” at a farewell dinner on the Dominion Monarch on. his return from a visit to Rhodesia, a Christchurch man and five companions decided to put a note in a bottle and throw it overboard. The text of the note, written on a menu card, was: “Thrown overboard some 200 miles from Wellington, New Zealand. 24.00 hours New Zealand time, July 30/31, 1954.” The signatures of the six men, and a Timaru address followed. The bottle was found by a young Auckland boy. “He thought he had found a treasure map, so he was a little disappointed," his mother said. “It caused a lot of excitement and we had a job to get the note out of the bottle. We had to break it eventually.”
