Visit To Bonn And Paris
(Rec. 10 p.m.) PARIS, June 19. The Australian Prime Minister, Mr Menzies, will meet President de Gaulle today during a 24-hour visit to Paris.
The French press has heralded the Prime Minister’s visit as that of an ‘‘envoy" of the British Prime Minister, Mr Macmillan, with the mission of urging greater flexibility by France in her approach to summit talks. Mr Menzies, who has been visiting West Germany, is due In Paris by air early today. Mrs Menzies flew to Paris yesterday from London. The French Prime Minister, Mr Michel Debre, and Commonwealth Ambassadors have arranged to meet Mr Menzies at the airport. At noon, Mr Menzies will lay a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Warrior below the Arc de Trlomphe and will then call on General de Gaulle. He will meet Mr Debre again later in the day and will return to London on Saturday. Yesterday, Mr Menzies had talks with the West German Chancellor, Dr. Adenauer, during a one-day visit to Bonn. A West German Government spokesman said after the twohour talks in the Chancellery that they took place in a cordial atmosphere and in a spirit of friendship. He said both sides' considered the exchange of views as very useful. It had been a general discussion of the political and economic situation, especially in Euroßp. Usually well-informed sources said the discussion on the European political situation was largely devoted to the question of a possible summit conference with Russia.
Mr Menzies is known to regard a summit meeting as desirable, but Dr. Adenauer is thought unlikely to have lost his unwillingness to see such a meeting without some prior success on Berlin at the Foreign Ministers’ conference at Geneva.
Last night Mr Menzies was the guest of Dr. Adenauer at dinner.
Diver Recovers From Bends DARWIN, June 19Zensho Nakanura, a 22-year-old Japanese diver, has been discharged from Darwin Hospital after his successful fight against death from the bends. Nakanura was taken to hospital a fortnight ago after spending many hours in a home-made decompression chamber. He was stricken after diving to 180 feet for pearl shell in the Arafura Sea. The superintendent of the Darwin Hospital, Dr. D. Mounsey, said today that Nakanura still had weakness in his legs and only time would tell how much he would improve. The fact that he could walk at all showed a “remarkable recovery” Dr. Mounsey said.
