FLOODS IN INDIA

Thousands Homeless

CALCUTTA, June 19

Serious floods were estimated to have marooned 60,000 people and made another 30,000 homeless in the Indian States of Assam and Manipur, according to reports reaching Calcutta today. Days of heavy rain have swept rivers over their banks and strong currents are sweeping through villages and claiming new villages daily. Roads and other communications are disrupted, and bridges are reported to have been swept away. Many places reported bus loads of passengers being stranded and airstrips waterlogged. The scarcity of food, fuel and drinking water is increasing the distress of the refugees.
