ATOMIC PLANT ACCIDENTS
Huge Insurance Plan Approved
(Rec. 10 p.m.)
PARIS, June 19. A plan for organising the huge insurance cover needed for the new hazard of nuclear accidents was approved in Paris yesterday by representatives of 17 countries of the Organisation for European Economic co-operation The plan provides for liability up to 15 million dollars (about £5.357,000) and claims made up to 10 years after an accident. The 17 countries are members of the steering committee of the O.E.E.C.’s European Nuclear Energy Agency. They agreed on a draft convention on third party liability in the field of nuclear energy, the O.E.E.C. announced. Completely new concepts in the legal and insurance fields have been worked out by the experts of the nuclear energy agency to fit the needs of the nuclear age. The plan now goes to the O.E.E.C. Council for approval, but this is expected to be little more than a formality.
