Subversion Bill In Ghana
(Rec. 11 p.m.) ACCRA, June 13. A bill giving Ghana's AttorneyGeneral increased powers of investigation of suspected crimes or subversive activities against the State was published in the Ghana Gazette today. The Investigation of Crime Bill will authorise the Attorney-Gen-eral to "direct any person to furnish information for the purpose of detecting the commission of offences against the State or certain subversive activities." It will be submitted to Parliament shortly.
Offences covered by the Bill are detailed as “any activity prejudicial to (a) the defence of Ghana, (b) the relations of Ghana with other countries, and (c) the security of the State.”
Persons failing to comply with the new law would be liable to a maximum of two years’ imprisonment. Companies and other corporate bodies would be liable to fines up to £5OOO.
