The Economy
Sir, —Reading Mr Holyoake’s account of his impressions of Russia during his urgent visit there to foster trade with New Zealand to help his Government’! financial difficulties, one cannot but feel happy to think of our own standard of living—the result of Labour Party policy, social security benefits, adequate child allowance, pay for holidays and sickness, free maternity beds, etc. The ragged, barefoot children, often poorly fed and poorly educated, are now past Tory policies. We still have some ugly smears from the National Government’s recent tenure, such as homeless families, high costs and financial difficulties, but Labour will overcome these obstacles to our great social advance.—Yours, etc., CHEERS. June 11, 1959.
