RACING MARAU’S DECISIVE WIN IN MANAWATU STEEPLES

PALMERSTON NORTH, June 14. Ridden a splendid race by C. R. Cooksley; Marau finished, solidly to score a decisive win in the Manawatu Steeplechase at Awapuni on Saturday. This was the .feature race on the final day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s winter meeting.

Marau improved gradually all the way over “the last round and he came through on the inside of the leader Havoc turning for home. Marau ran on- too well for his rival and won easily. Gay Student ran on for a fail- third ahead of the weakening pacemaker High Star. The favourite, Orelino, went Very poorly and jumped badly. So did Brent and Pine Grove. Melody Man finished strongly over the final stages to win the Palmerston North Handicap narrowly but well from Zohov. Reconvey was third, just beating the favourite and pacemaker Shirley-Downs. Cabonne returned to winning form when she held off Elrey to win the Members’ Handicap and complete a double with Melody Man worth £317 19s lor £l. The on-course double. Beulahsun and Star, paid £1092 15s for £l. Racing was held in fine weather and the track was heavy. The totalisator handled £62.418 10s. against £87,498 10s last year, a decrease of £25,060. BRISBANE, June 14. The New Zealand horse Balfast again became outright favourite for tomorrow’s Brisbane Cup after his impressive second in the Hamilton Handicap yesterday at Eagle Farm. Baystone also gave a sound cup performance in finishing second to Caesar in the P. J. O’Shea Stakes.

Balfast was beaten a short head in a photo finish yesterday by Rin Tin after being last, about 10 lengths from the lead, at the turn into the straight. Balfast drops 71b to Bst in the Brisbane Cup. Balfast dashed past another New Zealand horse, Foxmara, but just on the post gave ground and lugged out slightly, giving Rin Tin the advantage in the photo finish. Monfrere struggled on to beat Foxmara in the photo finish for third place. Balfast’s trainer, Doug. Webster, said: “Schumacher told me that Balfast had blown after the race, but it will do him good, and he will be a much better horse on Monday.’’ The order of favouritism for the Brisbane Cup is:— Balfast.

SYDNEY. June 14 The New Zealand fnur-year-oirt. Fondu. yesterday outclassed the opposition to score a runaway win in the Ellesmern Handicap (10 furlongs). at Randwick.

Fondu handled the heavy going much better than hi* rivals to streak right away in the st-aighf. Backed down in a big betting race. Fondu won the race bv flv*» lengths from Luck’s A Fortune. Caybros. which rt ”sed in the b»ttir»*?. was a poor third three lengths away.

Fondu. which has won in “all sorts of going" in New Zealand, showed a glimpse of his best form when a close fourth at Canterbury in the Wednesday Handicap (9i furlongsi. on Wednesday.

The apprentice. Joe Coffey, who is now indentu’-ed to Jack Denham, replaced W. Feggans on Fondu yesterday. Coffey had to disobev instructions to win the race, according to the turf correspondent of the “Sunday Telegraph.” The trainer. Brian Hayter. a Ndw Zealander on holiday in Australia, had instructed Coffey to hold Fondu in behind the leaders. Fondu began so smartly Coffey did fight him. He let the horse stride along in front.
