COUNCIL REFUSES LOAN
Golden Bay-Motueka Grandstand
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 12. The New Zealand Rugby Union Council today refused the application of the Golden Bay-Motueka union for a £6300 loan for extensions to its grandstand, on the ground that the union required a greater contribution than the £lOOO that Golden Bay-Motueka was to provide. Mr C S. Hogg said the executive considered that if the loan was given it would be in the nature of a straight-out grant, because the provincial union would be unable to repay it. The executive had recommended that Golden Bay-Motueka try and improve its finances before applying again.
The West Coast union was given a special grant of £lOO to assist with schoolboy football, but the applications of the Buller. Marlborough. Nelson, and South Canterbury unions for special grants were referred back to the executive for further action.
Mr T. H. Pearce was appointed manager of the AH Blacks in the four tests against the Lions. Messrs Hogg and G. A. Brown were appointed the union's delegates at the international board meeting to be held in New Zealand in August. Apia has also extended an invitation for a New Zealand Maori team to tour in 1960, but no decision will be made until the council had discussed the tour with two representatives from Apia who will be in New Zealand within a few weeks. Mr M. R. R. Love said the Maoris would be quite happy to tour, but that he hoped the council would not forget that the Maori Advisory Board had asked for a big tour, not necessarily to the British Isles, but possibly to the East. The union will have 5000 copies of a booklet on back play prepared by Mr C. K. Saxton at the New Zealand coaching school for half-backs and five-eighths in Wellington earlier this year. These will be distributed free to all unions.
