PRISONS FOR YOUTHS
Recommendation By Magistrates
Neu Zealana Press ‘Association >
AUCKLAND, June 12.
A conference of Magistrates today decided to urge the Government to make provision for youth prisons, detention centres or other special institutions for youths, including the establishment of probation homes
At Auckland today, the conference unanimously considered that the present facilities fot dealing with youthful offenders were inadequate. At the present time, there was very little between liberty on probation and detention in a Borstal centre available to the Courts as a means of dealing with youth delinquency, it was stated.
Magistrates fqlt alternatives should exist in tHe way of detention centres as already provided for under the Criminal Justice Act. 1954
They also felt that provision should be made for the establishment of probation homes along the lines of those which had been functioning in other coun tries for a number of years. Such probation homes would be used in conjunction with terms of probation to ensure that the offender was removed from the environment which was prob ably the cause of his delinquency
