2 (Rec. 8 p.m.) LISBON, June 12. * Princess Margaret went swimming twice today on the final day * of her private visit to Lisbon and so stringent were the precautions to ensure her privacy that the ’ Lisbon correspondent of the * “Daily Mirror” said the bathing * expeditions had ended up as a * combined defence programme car- *• ried out by the Portuguese Army. security forces and police. n« “I almost fear there will have C to be a call-up.” the correspon- •• dent added. t The highest temperatures of the year attracted the Princess to the* * water. Her first bathe was south of Lisbon, at Calhariz, the country estate of the Duke of Palmela, a *’ former Ambassador to London. The pool was some distance from the house. -i. The “Daily Mirror” correspondent said: “This dip caused a fullscale operation. There were troops and police careering around in jeeps and there were mobile posts with walkie-talkies.” t In the afternoon, the Princess Went to a nearby manor and when she saw the pool belonging to her hostess, Mrs Orlena ScolVille. of New York, she asked:
“Do you think 1 could have a quick swim?” Princess Margaret was dressed for the weather in a white cotton snndress printed with red roses, with a short-sleeved detachable top. The “Daily Express” gave hall a news page to its “picture of the week” —one of Princess Margare bathing. The picture, showing her head and shoulders above water, had the caption: “Like a water lily in her yellow poodle cap, a floating Princess sticks her toes out as the temperature reaches the upper eighties.” . The photographer who manageo to get the picture in spite of the police precautions was a Frenchman.
The Princess’s six-day visit ended with a banquet and dance at the Casino in Estoril, the resort town at the mouth of the Tagus river
The party was given by organisers of the British trade fair and the entire casino was taken over The gaming rooms were closed for the occasion. The Princess wore a long white evening gown trimmed In red. She wore a diamond tiara, necklace and earrings.
