Rewi Alley
Sir,—-Recently a correspondent suggested that Rewi Alley was not free to write his views. Others seem to want to hear of any mistakes the regime in China has made. This is the reply I received when the letters were forwarded to him (verse form omitted to save space): “‘You should not be so damned doctrinaire; really, how can you be so uncritical? The whole fabric must be riddled with mistakes! It’s these we want to hear more of’’ They do so hate not to feel superior; to admit that red dust can quickly change into burnished steel, when old burdens, decayed tabu are so definitely dropped. Critical? A million eyes of those who once starved, were beaten, trampled on, look at me questioningly: doctrinaire? Why don’t they even want to hear of the thing we live by? Disgusted, I slip in another sheet. What the hell! I write as I please.”—Yours, etc., P. J. ALLEY. May 31, 1959.
