“Peter The Great”
Sir, —Some weeks ago, your reviewer of Klyuchevsky’s “Peter the Great” (translated . by Lilrana Archibald) quoted the words,' “Forgive - everything,” scrawled on a piece of paper by Peter as* he lay dyings and suggested on th|s evidence that Peter had repented his life’s work and that Klyiichevsky had suppressed the fact. But B. H. Sumner, in “Peter the Great and the Emergence of Russia” (p. 110), gives the words written by Peter in his last hours as, “I leave all . . . ,” evidently the beginning of a will. Are these alternative versions, or is there some confusion here?— Yours, etc., FELICITY POCOCK. May 31, 1959.
[Our reviewer, comments: “The version of Peter the Great’s last words given in the review referred to may be found on page 473 of R. B. Mowat’s “History of Europe and the Modern World, 1492-1914.” Oxford (1927). The words were quoted only for their interest: and your correspondent may rest assured that they are not part of a deep-laid scheme directed against either Peter the Great or Klyuchevsky or Mrs 1 Archibald.]
