PROVISION OF MEALS
Obligation For Licensees
The obligation of licensees to provide meals to travellers was emphasised by the chairman (Mr A. P.‘ Blair, S.M.) at the annual meeting of the Selwyn Licensing yesterday. He said one publican had been prosecuted recently for failing in this duty. Mr Blair said the committee expected licensees and owners to carry out necessary renovations to their premises as stipulated in requisitions served on seven hotels in the district. The police would report the work carried out to the next quarterly meeting in September, when the committee would consider any action necessary. Six publicans’ licences were granted as follows: —Ronald Hyam Carpenter, Darfield Hotel; Brendon Dunn, Southbridge Hotel; Gerald Patrick Goulding, Templeton Hotel; Donald Finlayson, Halswell Hotel; Raymond Alexander Gallagher, Lincoln Hotel, after granting of certificate of waiver; and Denis John Vaughan, Railway Hotel, Rakaia. The following renewals of publicans’ licences were made:— James Harry Sugden, Commercial Hotel, Kirwee; Alexander Alan McPherson, Dunsandei Hotel, after granting of certificate of waiver; Kevin Patrick O’Sullivan, Hororata Hotel; William Charles Davies, Leeston’ Hotel; Robert William Henry Claude Smith. Phoenix Hotel, Papanui; Roy William Jackman, Railway Hotel, Doyleston; Myra Ellen Garver. Royal Hotel, Springfield; Marwood William John Palmer, Sheffield Hotel; Francis James Beban. Yaldhurst Hotel; Humphrey John Moynehan. Ellesmere Arms Hotel, Tai Tapu; Lewis Henry Nicholle, Rolleston Hotel; Andrew Hugh Todd, Prebbleton Hotel; George Arthur Wright, Springston Hotel; William Trevor Gifford, Belfast Hotel; Howard James Smith, South Rakaia Hotel. Rakaia; Ronald Maxwell May, Methven Hotel; Kenneth Gordon McLaughlin, Canterbury Hotel. Methven; Francis William Palmer, Chertsey Hotel. George Walter Jack was granted an accommodation licence for the West Melton Hotel. Applications for the issue of a publican’s licence for the Bluff Hotel, Coalgate, and for renewal of accommodation licence for the Glacier Hotel, Bealey, were adjourned to May 29. Transfers of the following licences were approved: J. D. Hinton to A. P. Goulding, Templeton Hotel; L. F. Cunneen to R. H. Carpenter, Darfield Hotel. Plans for the Railway Hotel, Rakaia, were approved in principle subject to compliance with ■Health Department and local bqdy requirements.
