BRITISH AMATEUR TITLE

Young American Player Wins (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, May 31. A 21-year-old American university student, Deane Beman, from Maryland, playing in his first British amateur golf championship, won the title at Sandwich, Kent, yesterday. In the 36-hole final he beat his 43-year-old fellow countryman, William Hyndman, 3 and 2. Hyndman, a member of the United States Walker Cup team, which beat Britain earlier this month, lost the first two holes and was always trailing behind his young opponent. His form throughout the week had stamped him as favourite for the title, but he was unable to find an answer for Beman’s determined attacking golf. American players have nov. won the British amateur title 14 times. Five post-war finals have been all-American affairs.
