FALSE ALARM OF FIRE
City Shop Quickly Evacuated
Lunch-hour crowds quickly surrounded the premises of T. Armstrong and Company about 1.40 p.m. yesterday when fire alarms began to sound and staff and customers streamed from the shop. Three fire engines attracted further crowds.
However, there was no fire. An electrician working on ceiling wires had accidentally broken one of the automatic sprinklers setting off the alarms. The shop was evacuated by more than 200 staff and customers within two minutes of the alarms going off. “It’s the best .fire drill ever.” said an executive. Mr T. Williams, after organising the r.apid evacuation. After tracing the cause of the alarm, the three fire units left.
